The Sinclair Method of Alcohol Extinction

At Professional Treatment Centers, we utilize the Sinclair Method in the treatment of alcohol addiction. This method uses a combination of medications like Naltrexone, Nalmefene, Acamprosate or Vivitrol as well as addiction counseling to help patients overcome their addiction to alcohol. The medications act as antagonists to decrease the craving for alcohol over time, while the patient continues to consume controlled amounts of alcohol.

This treatment was developed on the idea that in some people, alcohol triggers the release of more endorphins than the average person. This extra release of endorphins in the affected person teaches the body to believe that drinking alcohol is an activity that should be repeated and therefore, can result in addiction. Taking one of the prescribed medications at least an hour before drinking allows the medicine to reach the brain and coat the neurons. Then, when the patient drinks alcohol, these neurons cannot fire, effectively removing the reward stimulus of the extra endorphins. Over time, this can completely remove the urge to drink through a mechanism called pharmacological extinction, because there is no reward trigger in the brain.
